O'Neil she was in her high school times when she took part in the auditions, auditioned in the 3rd season of Canadian Idol within the early months of 2005. The singer made it through to the top hundred round following the judges' praise for her singing ability. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. She was however a complete loser in the top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were stunned by the results and instructed the crowd to select contestants such as Melissa O'Neil, who had most impressive singing talent. After giving consistently stellar performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner presented two incredible performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and was the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in time of the show. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol right away.
